U.S. Navy LSSN Karen Kain, a supply clerk with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, left, and U.S. Navy Capt. Doug Stephens, the commanding officer of Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point, cut a ceremonial cake in honor of the U.S. Navy’s 244th birthday during a celebration at the mess hall at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, Oct. 10, 2019. Naval tradition dictates that the oldest and youngest sailor present cut the cake. The congressional authorization to form the Navy was approved Oct. 13, 1775, and every year we celebrate all the brave men and women who have served in one of the strongest naval forces of the last 244 years.
