Friends and family of Purple Heart recipient Spc. Evan John Mettie gather behind the official memorial sign during the renaming of the Selah Airstrip to the Mettie Airstrip at the Yakima Training Center, Washington, Tuesday. Mettie received the Purple Heart after a roadside improvised explosive device left him paralyzed with a severe traumatic brain injury during his second deployment to Iraq in 2006. The sign will be mounted at the entrance to the mile-long airstrip, which is one of only three facilities in the nation where units can fly in and deploy with live rounds and munitions to train.
