Command Sgt. Maj. Paul Desanto, command sergeant major of Yakima Training Center, unveils the official memorial sign honoring Purple Heart recipient Spc. Evan Mettie during a ceremony renaming the Selah Airstrip to the Mettie Airstrip at the Yakima Training Center, Washington, Tuesday. Mettie received the Purple Heart after a roadside improvised explosive device left him paralyzed with a severe traumatic brain injury during his second deployment to Iraq in 2006. The sign will be mounted at the entrance to the mile-long airstrip, which is one of only three facilities in the nation where units can fly in and deploy with live rounds and munitions to train.
