Pfc. Christian Phipps, a culinary specialist with the 109th Multifunctional Medical Battalion, Iowa Army National Guard, pours coffee into a container to serve during the final level of the Philip A. Connelly culinary competition at the Iowa City Readiness Center on Feb. 1, 2020. Phipps joined the team near the end of the state level competition and has adapted quickly to the physical and mental demands of working with limited time and space. The 109th culinary team has spent the past three years competing at state and regional levels to have a chance at winning the national title for best culinary operation in the Army National Guard, field-feeding category. They are now competing against three National Guard units from Nebraska, New York and Virginia. The Philip A. Connelly Awards Program was established in 1968 to recognize excellence in U.S. Army food service. (U.S. Army National Guard photos by Sgt. Tawny Schmit)
