Maj. Gen. Ben Corell, Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, embraces Staff Sgt. Ryan Meier, the culinary management noncommissioned officer of the 109th Multifunctional Medical Battalion culinary team, during an awards ceremony at the conclusion of the national level evaluation of the Philip A. Connelly culinary competition at the Iowa City Readiness Center on Feb. 1, 2020. Corell presented each member his personal coin of excellence for their superior performance throughout the past three years competing at state and regional levels to have a chance at winning the national title. They are now competing against three National Guard units from Nebraska, New York and Virginia. The Philip A. Connelly Awards Program was established in 1968 to recognize excellence in U.S. Army food service. (U.S. Army National Guard photos by Sgt. Tawny Schmit)
