Retired Army 1st Sgt. Gordan Wiitanen, a retired World War II veteran and Purple Heart medal recipiant, drops the ceremonial first puck at the “Battle of the Bridge” hockey game. During the “Battle of the Bridge” game, the Michigan Upper Peninsula Veterans Hockey Club played against the Saginaw Spirit Warriors, another all-veteran team from lower Michigan, at the Dee Stadium, Houghton, Mich. on Feb. 22, 2020. Along with giving veterans a chance to experience armed forces camaraderie once again, Battle of the Bridge acts as a money-raising opportunity for the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
