Marines with Alpha Company, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, exit the diving chamber and prepare to bring gear topside to assemble a combat rubber reconnaissance craft aboard USS North Carolina during a training exercise at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, June 23. The reconnaissance Marines based in Okinawa, Japan, were provided a unique opportunity to train aboard a U.S. Navy Virginia class fast attack submarine. USS North Carolina is designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships; project power ashore with Tomahawk cruise missiles and Special Operation Forces; carry out Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions; support battle group operations, and engage in mine warfare.
