On the afternoon of January 7, 2020, Staff Sgt. Matthew Frisbie, Administrative NCO for the 204th Regional Training Institute (RTI), Idaho Army National Guard on Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho shuffles through files in preparation to meet and process incoming students.
The 204th RTI provides individualized soldier training in support of The Army School System (TASS). They conduct training for U.S. Army and National Guard soldiers in various combat support specialties. Class 91A30 is designed to advance soldiers to supervisory status and increase their proficiency in maintaining the Abrams Tank and its complex systems.
The class is an extensive in-depth, rigorous, curriculum into the Abrams Tank systems and how to troubleshoot problems. The class also includes leadership training. The highlight of class work will culminate in an exercise removing the turret from an Abrams Tank and re-installing it back in the tank hull.
Since its introduction into the U.S. Military in 1980 the Abrams has frequently undergone upgrades and changes to improve its capabilities. The technology and crews that operate the Abrams have gained a reputation of high regard throughout the world, but without the personnel who maintain the Abrams ability to move, shoot and communicate the Abrams would be nothing more than a 60 ton static display.
