    1st Marine Aircraft Wing

U.S. Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron 172 and 9th Engineer Support Battalion begin construction on the Vertical Take-Off and Landing pad on Ie Shima, Okinawa, Japan, March 5, 2020. Over the course of the next six months the Marines and Sailors with MWSS-172, 9th ESB and Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5 will work to redesign the old VTOL pads for the purpose of bringing the operational capabilities of the island up to full capacity. The new pad will replace the previous four and will measure 600 feet by 600 feet, large enough to facilitate an entire squadron. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Ethan M. LeBlanc)
