Helping Hands Deliver Humanitarian Aid to Haiti

U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Derek Mensch, a native of Syracuse, N.Y. and a rifleman with 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, helps offload boxes for redistribution in Port of Jeremie, Haiti, Aug. 31, 2021. “It was better than I expected it to be, getting to work alongside the Haitians was an amazing experience,” Mensch said. The Marines and sailors aboard the USS Arlington (LPD 24) have been working in support of Joint Task Force-Haiti for a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission. “Being there and being able to help thousands of people was remarkable. Smiling and laughing with everyone while we’re all drenched in sweat passing boxes was incredible. That kind of experience was the reason I wanted to become a United States Marine.” (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Jacqueline C. Arre)
