Capt. James R. McIver, Naval Station Newport commanding officer, delivers remarks to a group of state, community and Navy members gathered at McAllister Point for a groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 5, 2021 for a new solar array to be developed by NextEra Energy. The former installation landfill will be one of two sites NextEra Energy will erect solar voltaic arrays to generate clean energy for community partners including a number of colleges and universities in the ocean state. This opportunity was made possible through an enhanced use lease with the Navy to re-imagine and re-purpose some under-utilized properties at NAVTSTA Newport.
