There are several types of dams commonly found in the U.S. These dams differ in a few ways – the material they are made of, the way they hold or direct water, and their purpose. Buttress dams are a type of gravity dam with a thinner main wall supported by thin perpendicular walls called buttresses. Spaced at regular intervals, the buttresses are built to divert the force that the water exerts onto the dam down to the dam’s foundation. While they are often triangular, buttresses can take different shapes depending on the architecture of the dam and where the dam is built. More information is available on the National Inventory of Dams (HTTPS://NID.SEC.USACE.ARMY.MIL) or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Dam Safety Program website (https://www.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Dam-Safety-Program/).
