There are several types of dams commonly found in the U.S. These dams differ in a few ways – the material they are made of, the way they hold or direct water, and their purpose. Embankment dams are constructed from compacted soil and/or rock and are the most common type of dam in the U.S. These dams are constructed to hold water in a reservoir. More information is available on the National Inventory of Dams (HTTPS://NID.SEC.USACE.ARMY.MIL) or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Dam Safety Program website (https://www.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Dam-Safety-Program/).
