There are several types of dams commonly found in the U.S. These dams differ in a few ways – the material they are made of, the way they hold or direct water, and their purpose. A gravity dam is a concrete dam with a triangular cross-section that is constructed straight across a wide valley. The most common kind of concrete dam, it uses its own weight to resist the force exerted on it by the reservoir. Gravity dams are the largest and heaviest of the concrete dams. They have a large base, and they can only be built on a rock foundation. Did you know some embankment dams have gravity sections? – usually the spillway. More information is available on the National Inventory of Dams (HTTPS://NID.SEC.USACE.ARMY.MIL) or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Dam Safety Program website (https://www.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Dam-Safety-Program/).
