U.S. Marine Corps Col. Speros Koumparakis, commanding officer, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, speaks to Kenneth Wells, a World War II veteran, during a visit to Mokapu Elementary School, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Dec. 6, 2021. The visit was coordinated by the Best Defense Foundation in order to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Wells volunteered to join the Marine Corps in 1944, served under the 29th Marine Regiment, 6th Marine Division, assaulted the beach at Okinawa in April of 1945, and was later medically discharged in October of 1945 after being wounded by mortar fire.
