Marines and Afghan Evacuees Celebrate Shab-e Yalda

    211221-N-YS140-017
Fort Pickett, Va. (Dec. 21, 2021) Lance Cpl. Baltazar Hinojosa, a rifleman with Company C, 23rd Marine Regiment from Brownsville, Texas dances with an Afghan evacuee during a Shab-e Yalda celebration. Shab-e Yalda is a traditional winter solstice festival marking both the longest night of the year and the first of the 40 days of winter. Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan. (U.S. Navy photo by Chief Mass Communication Specialist John Pearl)
