Fort Pickett, Va. (Dec. 21, 2021) An array of traditional fruit is available at a Shab-e Yalda celebration. Shab-e Yalda is a traditional winter solstice festival marking both the longest night of the year and the first of the 40 days of winter. The reddish hues of the fruit symbolize the coming sunrise after the longest night. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan. (U.S. Navy photo by Chief Mass Communication Specialist John Pearl)
