Myakka State Park is home to various wildlife, including the American alligator that suns themselves on the Myakka River and lakes. The American alligator at once endangered are now thriving due to state and federal protections, habitat preservation, restoration and conservation efforts such as the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. Their size, musculature and powerful jaws are pretty intimidating and demand respect. It is no wonder that the alligator has avoided extinction for 65 million years. (Photo by Brigida I. Sanchez)
