Sgt. 1st Class Keith Martinson, healthcare noncommissioned officer with Medical Department Activity-Japan and Expert Soldier Badge medical lane organizer, briefs candidates on standards and procedures during day three of the first-ever U.S. Army Japan ESB competition training week, where soldiers refined medical tactics and procedures at Sagami General Depot, Japan April 13.
Candidates gained an in-depth understanding of tactical combat casualty care procedures, including requesting medical evacuations; providing care under fire; performing first aid; evaluating and treating for heat injuries, spinal injury, shock, abdominal wounds, and eye injuries; control bleeding; performing first aid in a chemical/biological environment; and treating a fracture and burn.
The grueling competition is spread out over two weeks including a week of candidate training and a week of testing which are designed to identify the most knowledgeable and competent experts in warrior tasks and drills. Training and testing are tough, realistic, and mission-focused.
Soldier combat readiness demonstrates deterrence and response capabilities. Only those who meet the standards by demonstrating combat readiness and proficiency skills will be awarded the coveted ESB.
