Sgt. Jonathan Roman, an engineer assigned to the 526th Engineer Construction Company based out of Fort Stewart, Ga., gently frees a man’s arm from farming equipment after he became trapped on May 9, 2022. Roman and his fellow engineers worked for six days finding and evacuating hundreds of injured civilians after a mock nuclear bomb was exploded nearby. The scenario is part of a multicomponent homeland emergency exercise named Guardian Response 22. The exercise, hosted at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Area, Ind., is designed to boost capabilities, hone their skills at urban search and rescue, and improve readiness of the Army units assigned to the Department of Defense’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Response Enterprise.
