Fort Hamilton’s main street was re-memorialized and renamed after a Brooklyn native, Vietnam War veteran, and Medal of Honor recipient 1st Lt. John E. Warren, Jr. during a ceremony at Fort Hamilton N.Y., May 20, 2022. The garrison worked on changing the name almost two years. The names of military assets should appropriately reflect the courage, values and sacrifices of our diverse military men and women, and 1st Lt. John Warren, Jr. is a great example of all that. While serving as a platoon leader in Vietnam, Warren, then a 22-year-old Soldier, used his body to shield his fellow Soldiers from a thrown enemy grenade; he gave the ultimate sacrifice and perished January 14, 1969 in Vietnam. Warren was also the recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. He is a local hero and he displayed the courage and values that Soldiers can emulate. (U.S. Army photo by Cpl.
