A C-54 Skymaster and a C-17 Globemaster III are staged at the Provo, Utah, airport May 20, 2022, as part of a two-day celebration honoring the life of the legendary World War II pilot Col. Gail Halverson. The U.S. Air Force, in conjunction with its 75th anniversary, renamed the Joint Base Charleston-based C-17 to “Spirit of the Candy Bomber” in honor of Halverson, best known as the “Berlin Candy Bomber” or “Uncle Wiggly Wings” for dropping candy to German children during the Berlin Airlift from 1948-49.
