Staff Sgt. Derrick Kennard (left), senior search and rescue (SAR) controller, Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) and Jamiel Vadell, instructor, AFRCC Basic Inland SAR Course (BISC) review clues, SAR resources and tactics to locate a simulated lost civilian traveler during the BISC held at the Gulf Coast State College, Bay County Emergency Management Center May 26-27, 2022. Kennard participates in the culmination exercise with other students the second day of the course. The AFRCC is located at First Air Force – Air Forces Northern, Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week as the United States' inland search and rescue coordinator. AFRCC serves as the single agency responsible for coordinating on-land federal SAR activities in the 48 contiguous United States, Mexico and Canada. SAR in the U.S. is based on the humanitarian principle which compels people to render aid to those in distress.
