During the conflict with ISIS, many cities across Iraq witnessed widespread infrastructure damage. The presence of large amounts of debris on families’ properties is one of the main obstacles hindering the sustainable return for internally displaced persons. USAID is helping remove debris, which is then transferred to a processing site, where it is sorted and can even be reused to pave roads and build new construction projects. The debris sorting process is also providing jobs to local residents. Photo credit: IOM May, 2022.
