Parween participated in a theater arts program in Dawoodiya Camp, supported by USAID and implemented by Rusaz Organization of Reconstruction, Development, and Humanitarian Aid and IOM Iraq. Through this experience, theater quickly became her passion. It created a healthy social environment that allowed her to interact with people from different cultures and ethnic groups. “There were [participants] with many backgrounds: Christians, Muslims, Turkmen, and Yazidis. We got to know each other. We accept each other and have mutual respect,” recalls Parween. “If it was a religious ceremonial day for an ethnic group in the camp, for example, we all wore their traditional clothes and performed a play together. We are happy to learn about each other’s cultures and be there for each other on special days.”
Now, Parween teaches other children about theater, hoping to continue to involve more youth in these creative activities. Photo credit: IOM, June 2022.
