PACIFIC OCEAN (Sept. 16, 2022) –Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Leonard Cooper, left, guides Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Kirk McMillan in storing a line during a small boat evolution aboard amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), Sept. 16 Naval power projection capabilities underpin a broad spectrum of missions by allowing us to rapidly insert, support, and when appropriate, withdraw forces ashore; provide sea-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and fire support to forces ashore. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, comprised of Makin Island and amphibious transport docks USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26), is underway conducting integrated training operations with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit in the U.S. 3rd Fleet to prepare for an upcoming deployment.
