Capt. William M. Mathis, from Houston, executive officer of the Nimitz-class aircraft USS George Washington (CVN 73), conducts a zone inspection aboard the ship in Newport News, Virginia, Oct. 4, 2022. George Washington is conducting a simulated underway to validate shipboard habitability and operational services to ensure the ship meets the final refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) milestones. RCOH is a multi-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades, and modernization.
