Illinois State Military Museum's Christmas at the Front

Laudanum, a pain killer and opiate, was often sent to Soldiers during the Civil War. Mary Hudgins (background) of the Soldiers' Aid Society of Springfield explained that the drug was mixed into other drinks. Like opiates today, Laudanum was highly addictive. The Soldiers' Aid Society displayed what Soldiers received from family and friends when they were fighting in the Civil War as part of the Illinois State Military Museum's Christmas at the Front event on Dec. 10 at the museum in Springfield, Ill. The mission of the Illinois State Military Museum is to preserve and exhibit the military heritage of the Illinois National Guard.
