Rose Connolly of the Soldiers' Aid Society of Springfield, Ill., shows Colonel (retired) Paul Fanning, the director of the Illinois State Military Museum, how butter was packaged to send to the front during the Civil War. The Soldiers' Aid Society of Springfield displayed what Soldiers received from family and friends when they were fighting in the Civil War as part of the Illinois State Military Museum's Christmas at the Front event on Dec. 10 at the museum in Springfield. The Illinois State Military Museum's mission is to preserve and exhibit the military heritage of the Illinois National Guard.
