Our Navy’s strength has been forged by Sailors, past and present, who have overcome adversity and embodied our core values with an unwavering dedication to duty. ⚓
As we join the nation in celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth, we reflect on the trailblazers who define the Navy’s culture of excellence – starting with CAPT Chancellor Alphonso "Pete" Tzomes.
CAPT Tzomes became the first African American to command a nuclear-powered submarine, USS Houston (SSN-713) on May 28, 1983. Six Black Americans followed in his footsteps. As the only African American men to command submarines in the first 100 years of the submarine service, they are known as the "Centennial Seven" in honor of their accomplishment. Tzomes showed the value of discipline, perseverance, and not allowing other people's opinions of him to limit who he was or his potential during the course of his illustrious career.
