New York Army National Guard Capt. Sybil Baker, a member of the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, on duty in the Horn of Africa to provide security for U.S. installations, collects a blackthorn stick prior to a parade held to mark St. Patrick’s Day at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti on March 17, 2023. The 69th Infantry has led the New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade each year since 1851. The officers carry the blackthorn stick since it is the mark of an Irish gentleman and leader.Since the bulk of the unit is deployed, they marked the day in Africa instead.
