A Warrior Skills: Skill Level 1 book and a tourniquet are used as training tools in Buddy Aid, the National Guard’s first response to sexual assault, during a course in Lansing, Michigan, on Nov. 17, 2022. The course, developed and taught by Maj. Bridget Flannery, opens with statistics of the more than 60,000 U.S. service members killed and wounded in combat since September 11, 2001. As students are routinely able to describe the steps to properly apply a tourniquet, or where to find those steps, they often are not as confident in how to respond to a disclosure of sexual assault. More than 45,000 U.S. service members experience sexual assault every year. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Sgt. 1st Class Christie R. Smith)
