This #FortRileyFriday we check out two residences that are nearly identical. Not surprising, since they both housed post commanders when #FortRiley was in its infancy. One still does.
Quarters 100 (on Schofield Circle) was built in 1887 on the north end of Artillery Parade Field to house the Artillery Post's commanding officer. Quarters 1 (on Barry Ave.) is very similar to Quarters 100 and was built in 1888 for the commander of the Cavalry Post. Both were constructed in the Queen Anne style with Richardsonian Romanesque detailing. They both feature third-floor balconies that gave the commanders a clear view of their troops drilling on their respective parade fields.
While built using the same design, Quarters 1 is a slightly enlarged version of Quarters 100. Today, Quarters 1 serves the private residence of Fort Riley's current commanding general. Quarters 100 still serves as officer housing.
