Emergency Medical Services Chief, Greg Kunkel, with Fire and Emergency Services exits the smoke filled Drager Fire Training System with a team of firefighters after engaging in fire and smoke training aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California, March 30. Kunkel is using a specialized fire helmet that is newly approved in the United States, but has been used by firefighters in various European countries for several years. The new helmet is designed to include verbal and audio capabilities, a full face shield, and enhanced protection on all sides of the firefighters' heads. The Drager training systems allow firefighters to create and manipulate fire and smoke behaviors to experience real world situations, such as full burn-overs, in a safe and controlled environment.
