1st Lt. Mariah Connell, navigator with 152nd Operations Group, plays the bagpipes as members from the Beale Air Force Base Honor Guard carry the remains of Col. Michael Fugett during a memorial service at the fuel cell hangar at the Nevada Air National Guard base, Reno, Nev. June 3, 2023. Col. Fugett completed multiple active-duty assignments that included OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM prior to joining the Nevada Air National Guard in 2012. Fugett became the Nevada Air National Guard’s first Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System instructor pilot after the wing became equipped for C-130 wildland firefighting missions. Fugett accumulated over 4,100 flying hours, including more than 800 hours in combat, and more than 80 retardant drops over wildfires across the western United States.
