U.S. Marines with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 115, bow their heads during the invocation at their squadron’s 80th anniversary celebration at Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan, June 28, 2023. Officially nicknamed the “Silver Eagles,” VMFA-115 was organized on July 1, 1943, and has since flown widely within the Pacific theater, including World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and recently flew during Operation Iraqi Freedom in February of 2008. As part of the Marine Corps 2022 Aviation Plan, the squadron is on track to transition from the F/A-18 Hornet the F-35B Lightning II platform in 2026.
