U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Luke Vanderfeyst, a wrecker operator with Combat Logistics Battalion 8 (CLB-8), Combat Regiment 2 (CLR-2), 2nd Marine Logistics Group (2nd MLG), and a native of Fort Gratiot, Michigan, poses for a portrait photo July 2, 2023 while underway the San Antonio-class amphibious transportation dock USS New York (LPD 21). Vanderfeyst’s main priority while supporting UNITAS is to recover tactical vehicles while conducting convoys. He was recommended by 1st Sgt. Willie Tompkins, the company 1st Sgt. for Bravo Company in CLB-8, for outshining his peers with his leadership skills. Vanderfeyst’s advises his junior Marines “to understand situations are depending, it's important to think outside the box, look at all of your options when in a tricky situation and follow your gut instincts”. UNITAS is the world’s longest-running annual multinational maritime exercise that focuses on enhancing interoperability among multiple nations and joint forces during littoral and amphibious operations in order to build on existing regional partnerships and create new enduring relationships that promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility.
