Illinois National Guard Gold Star Families Enjoy Chicago Fire Boat Tour and Each Other

Illinois National Guard Gold Star parents Ron and Christi Slavenas (foreground) and Olivia and Alberto Segura (right) listen to the tour guide during the Chicago Fire Boat Architectural Tour on Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. The Seguras are the parents of Illinois Army National Guard Spc. Ashley Sietsema, an Army medic and college student, who was killed on Nov. 12, 2007 in a military motor vehicle accident in Kuwait. She was 20 years old. The Slavenas' are the father and "bonus" mother of 1st Lt. Brian Slavenas. Slavenas was killed in action on November 2, 2003 when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter he was piloting was shot down in Iraq. He was 30. The July 29 boat tour was organized by the U.S. Army's Survivor Outreach Services and the Illinois National Guard for the 34 Illinois National Guard Gold Star Families whose service members were killed overseas since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. The tour, led by Maj. Gen. Rich Neely, the Adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard, gave the Gold Star Families time to connect with each other and the leader of the Illinois National Guard.
