U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Luke Schmidt, rifleman with Weapons Company attached to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, attends a “Cerrado” wilderness survival class given by Brazilian marines, Aug. 12, 2023, at the Base Expedicionária de Fuzileiros Navais in Formosa, Brazil, during the Corpo de Fuzileiros Navais’ (Brazilian Marine Corps’) annual Infantry Training Exercise Formosa. The Marines learned survival techniques specific to Brazil and that can apply anywhere in the world, such as building a fire with sticks, what plants are edible or not and also camouflage techniques. Schmidt is from Warsaw, Indiana.
