Sgt. Ryan Austin, from Queens, New York, a Soldier with 1st Armored Division, III Armored Corps competing in the U.S. Army Forces Command Best Squad Competition performs a blood sweep during the mystery event, which was a Call for Fire, Aug. 17, 2023, on Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Call for Fire is when Soldiers request support through a radio from field artillery units, or a Fire Direction Center, to suppress an enemy with cannon fire by giving target location and description. The competition tests the squad’s proficiency in their warrior tasks and battle drills and identifies the most cohesive, highly trained, disciplined, and fit team that is ready to fight and win – while demonstrating a commitment to the Army Values (leadership, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, personnel courage) and Warrior Ethos.
