Spc. Hector Castro, an aircraft powerplant repairer from Illinois, is currently deployed to Camp Buehring, Kuwait, with the 642nd Aviation Support Battalion, New York Army National Guard. Castro joined the Army in 2021 after completing college to pursue a dream of being a pilot and chose to become a repairer to understand how the engines work for peace of mind when in the air.
“I enjoy learning more about my job,” said Castro. “More than just how to maintain and repair, I like to know the functionality of the engine and why things were designed a certain way. There’s always something to learn.”
Castro’s short-term goal is to be commissioned as an officer and attend flight school, but he is enjoying his time at Camp Buehring, stating that his favorite part of the deployment is his personal growth.
“During this deployment, I’ve learned that even when people are from completely different backgrounds, they can accomplish great things when they work as one unit,” Castro said.
