When devastating forest fires blazed through Fernana in 2021, Ahlem Ghazouani, a 22-year-old youth leader responded by organizing her community to help evacuate and provide aid to 500 affected families, including organizing medical aid to over 200 individuals who were injured. Once she brought the families to safety, Ahlem and her team coordinated community efforts to collect food, clothing, and cash donations to further support the affected families. Today, Ahlem, who has benefitted from USAID youth leadership training, is president of the Fernana Community Resilience Committee, a 7-member task force that aims to improve the Fernana community through youth civic engagement. In this role, Ahlem continues to spearhead a project in collaboration with local authorities and Civil Society Organizations to plant 500 trees in October 2023 to reforest the area damaged by fire, permitting the families to eventually return to their properties.
