U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Jasper Gomes, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) explosive ordnance disposal augment, screens excavated soil with Lao citizens during a recovery mission in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Sept. 27, 2023. Gomez also provides his EOD expertise throughout the mission to check for possible unexploded ordnance and other metals that could be placed underneath the ground. Since 1985, the United States and Lao governments have worked closely together to find and recover unaccounted-for personnel. There are still 288 missing Americans in Laos from the Vietnam War.
