U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Erik Merrill, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) life support investigator, screens excavated soil with Lao citizens during a recovery mission in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Sept. 27, 2023. As the LSI for the mission, Merrill uses his expertise to look through found object within the excavated soil to determine if any aircraft wreckage has been found. Since 1985, the United States and Lao governments have worked closely together to find and recover unaccounted-for American service members.
