This #FortRileyFriday we're back on the old Artillery Post centered around Artillery Parade field.
Building 404 Holbrook was built in 1902 out of native limestone. It is one of the five buildings along the southwest and southeast sides of Artillery Parade field that were constructed as barracks for the Artillery Post. (It's twin, building 402, was constructed in 1903.) According to the Army Corp of Engineers, building 404 was originally called Fremont Hall in honor of Gen. John C. Fremont. Fremont earned the nickname "The Pathfinder" for his multiple westward expeditions. On his third trip west in 1843, Fremont and his men camped at the junction of the Smoky Hill and Republican Rivers-which we now know as the origin of the Kansas River-prior to embarking on a journey to the "Oregon Country."
In recent years 404 Holbrook has been used for temporary office space and is currently unoccupied.
