USAID partnered with Shingal Engineering Organization (SHEO) to improve collaboration between farmers and the agricultural department in Qairawan. Although the department is one of the most active government offices in the Sinjar sub-district, farmers lacked a collective voice to advocate for their needs. In late spring, SHEO consulted with local farmers to identify common needs, helping establish a coordinating committee to increase access to much-needed services. Parallel to this, USAID/OTI provided the agricultural department with a tractor and equipment to increase their responsiveness to farmers’ needs and furnished a hall that the committee is now using to process farmers’ requests for services. Additionally, the committee recently prepared a detailed report on the needs of Qairawan’s farmers for the agricultural department to raise with Ninewa’s Directorate of Agriculture.
