Chris Dearing, Callan Marine Ltd., vice president, center in white helmet, gives the USACE Dredging Fundamentals Prospect Course of 40 students a tour of the dredging company’s maintenance and storage facility. The USACE Institute for Water Resources offers the Dredging Fundamentals Prospect Course to USACE employees. Through lectures, group discussions, examinations, and a field trip, this course teaches the student fundamental dredging theory and accepted dredging practices in addition to basic information on how Corps dredging projects are authorized, funded, engineered, managed, and maintained. A brief overview of dredge estimating, dredging safety, hydrographic surveys, and dredging contract administration is also provided. A field trip to see dredging equipment and/or dredging-related activities or navigation features is included to help the student understand the material taught in the classroom. This course is a prerequisite for the Dredge Cost Estimating course.
