The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Galveston District (SWG), Dredging Fundamentals Prospect Course visits a local dredging contractor, Callan Marine Ltd., in Galveston, Texas, Jan. 24, 2024. Chris Dearing, Callan Marine Ltd., vice president, far left in white helmet, gave the class of 40 a tour of the dredging company’s maintenance and storage facility in Galveston, Texas. The USACE Institute for Water Resources offers the Dredging Fundamentals Prospect Course annually to USACE employees. Through lectures, group discussions, examinations, and a field trip, this course teaches the student fundamental dredging theory and accepted dredging practices in addition to basic information on how Corps dredging projects are authorized, funded, engineered, managed, and maintained. A brief overview of dredge estimating, dredging safety, hydrographic surveys, and dredging contract administration is also provided. A field trip to see dredging equipment and/or dredging-related activities or navigation features is included to help the student understand the material taught in the classroom. This course is a prerequisite for the Dredge Cost Estimating course.
