U.S. Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer 2 Ryan-Michael “GRETZKY” Daffin, a Houston, Texas native and avionics officer with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 162 (Reinforced), 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) (MEU(SOC)), poses for a photo aboard the Wasp class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan, Feb. 6, 2024.
Daffin has been a Marine for 18 years and feels the Marine Corps has given him the opportunity to accept the challenge of becoming a Marine, making Marines, and serve with individuals throughout all walks of life.
“There are men and women I would call in times of need before some of my own blood relatives. This is the bond created with those you have experienced discomfort and in less than desirable conditions in lands far away. I would not trade these times.”
As far as his career goes, the Marine Corps has allowed Daffin to fulfill a childhood dream.
“It has provided the opportunity to learn a technical skill on aircraft I grew up dreaming about as a kid. The programs such as the Enlisted to Warrant Officer Program enabled me to excel further than I could ever imagine. I have been given the chance to surpass the challenge presented by my grandfather with opportunities that were not available to him in World War II. I have a seat at the table, also welcomed to it.”
The 26th MEU(SOC), embarked with the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group (BAT ARG), are currently on a scheduled deployment in the Mediterranean Sea. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Michele Clarke)
