U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Maya Gordon, a Brunswick, Georgia native and intelligence specialist and Fusion Chief with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) (MEU(SOC)) poses for a photo aboard the Wasp class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan, Feb. 8, 2024.
“I have served in the Marine Corps since 2014 (10 years). I’ve lived in California, Germany, and North Carolina for about three years each during that time. I primarily joined the Marine Corps to travel. I can say with no hesitation that I have been afforded countless travel opportunities. I doubt that I would have seen half the places I’ve been to if it wasn’t for the corps, and for that I am eternally grateful. I have also come in contact with people I consider family who will be stuck with me for a lifetime. I met my best friend during military occupational specialty school, we’re both from Georgia and she has visited me at every duty station since she separated. It’s been almost 10 years of friendship.
Joining the Marine Corps has not only allowed SSgt Gordon the opportunity to travel the world, but also her family.
“I’ve been blessed enough to have my mother, grandmother, and brother visit me in uncharted territory for themselves. My next set of orders will give me an opportunity to work at a minimum of two embassies abroad - this will just further my introduction to different cultures during my time in the Marine Corps.”
The 26th MEU(SOC), embarked with the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group (BAT ARG), are currently on a scheduled deployment in the Mediterranean Sea. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Michele Clarke)
